Your first time

Nobody here is
watching you

Everyone in the room arrived once for the first time, felt ridiculous for the first ten minutes, and stayed anyway. Here is everything you might want to know before Saturday, so that the only surprise is the good one.

The honest version

What it is actually like

You will take your shoes off, light a small oil lamp, and sit on a cushion in a room with about twenty other people. Then music starts and you will be asked to shake your body, or speak nonsense, or dance with your eyes closed — for a solid hour.

It feels absurd at first. Everybody’s does. What almost nobody expects is the silence that arrives afterwards: twenty minutes of sitting where, for once, there is genuinely nothing to fidget with. Then some chanting, a compassion practice, and tea in a circle where you may say a great deal or nothing whatsoever.

You can stop at any point, sit down, drink water, or leave. No one will ask why, and no one will come to check on you. The whole method rests on nobody watching anybody.

Where this comes from

The lineage we gather in

We are a small independent circle in Toronto, not an institution. What we offer is a set of methods, kept as faithfully as we know how, and a room in which to do them.

Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh

Osho · 1931 – 1990

The Indian mystic who designed the active meditations we use. His argument was that the old techniques assumed an old kind of body — one that had already worked hard, slept well and suppressed less. For a modern nervous system, he said, silence has to be arrived at through catharsis rather than instead of it. Every method here follows from that single idea: first empty, then sit.

He spoke for thirty-five years, on everything from Zen to Sufism to Jesus, and left several thousand recorded discourses behind. We play them occasionally, and argue about them frequently.

Bodhisattva Swami Anand Arun

Our guide

One of Osho’s early Nepali disciples, who took sannyas in 1969 and has spent more than five decades carrying these methods to people who would otherwise never have met them. He founded Osho Tapoban, the forest retreat in the hills outside Kathmandu, and travels continually to guide meditation camps.

Buddha Hall Toronto gathers in his guidance: the same emphasis on catharsis before silence, the same insistence that meditation is a technique anyone can use, and the same habit of ending everything with tea and laughter.

OSHO is a registered trademark of Osho International Foundation. We are an independent community gathering, offering these meditations in the spirit in which they were given.

Health & personal responsibility

The active meditations involve vigorous movement, fast breathing and sometimes strong emotional release. They are safe for most people and modifiable for almost everyone — but you take part at your own discretion, and you remain responsible for your own body. Rest, sit down or step out whenever you need to. Nobody will mind.

Tell us when you register if you are pregnant, recovering from an injury or surgery, living with a heart or blood-pressure condition, prone to seizures, or working through something psychologically difficult. Every stage can be done sitting or lying down, and the facilitator will show you how.

Our gatherings are a spiritual and community practice. They are not therapy, medical treatment, or religious instruction. If you are in crisis, please also reach out to a doctor or a crisis line — meditation sits alongside that kind of care, not in place of it.
